"A remarkable terroir, clay-limestone mixed with flint and millstone"

It is in this valley that 3/4 of our vineyards are located. Talus Saint Prix is the historical and family heart of our domaine; it's a small village of around a hundred inhabitants, with 40 hectares in the appellation. In the south-western extension of the Côte des Blancs and on the northern outskirts of the Côte de Sézanne, Les Coteaux du Petit Morin has a unique terroir of clay-limestone mixed with flint, millstone and white marl. While Côte des Blancs and Côte de Sézanne are predominantly planted with Chardonnay, Talus Saint Prix has over 60% Meunier in its appellation area. The explanation lies in the Petit Morin itself; a tributary of the Marne, it is an essential factor for the valley's vineyards. It brings coolness and humidity to the surrounding vines, particularly in spring, making them vulnerable to the risk of late frosts. Meunier is a slightly later-starting grape variety, and a little more resistant to frost, making it an obvious choice for our region. The domaine has recently expanded into the neighbouring village of Oyes, which is sandier, and into Congy, with a very small plot planted with an old grape variety, Petit Meslier, which was forgotten for decades because it was difficult to ripen.

The southern part of the Champagne appellation is a veritable mosaic of small valleys with multiple exposures. We grow just over a hectare at Montier en L'Isle, near Bar sur Aube. Three quarters of the village's 60 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir. The vines are planted on steep slopes. The subsoil is mainly composed of marl, hard limestone and clay. Our Aube vineyard is made up of five plots spread over two valleys, which we planted in 2002. Chardonnays occupy 1⁄4 of our parcels, Pinots Noirs 3⁄4. 120 km separate us from Talus Saint Prix, but we are equipped to come and work our soils, protect our vines against disease in the spring and harvest with our team of grape-pickers. Why did you extend your vineyard to Montier en l'isle? At the time, we were looking to compensate for the loss of an area taken over by one of our owners, and this land for planting was a great opportunity both to learn how to work another terroir and to limit the risks associated with the weather ;)

Since 2023, we have been cultivating a large plot of 1.5 hectares, part of which we acquired thanks to participatory funding. The Ardre Valley has the same cool, wet microclimate as the Petit Morin Valley. Frequent spring frosts and the nature of the clay-limestone soils favour the cultivation of the meunier grape variety, which accounts for 75% of the village's grape varieties and almost all of our plot.
